Presenting at the DCU 2025 Conference

As my work over the past five years at Haumea Ecoversity focuses on developing holistic, transformative ecoliteracy for creative professionals, I am delighted to be presenting an overview for the 2025 Institute for Climate and Society Annual Conference at Dublin City University (DCU) on the theme: ‘Dispatches from a changing climate: Engaging society through activism, storytelling and the arts‘.

At Haumea Ecoversity, we help professional creatives cultivate an ecological worldview and corresponding holistic values so they can foster inclusive, ecoliterate conversations and activate stories for change—with and for their communities and audiences. At its core, our peer-to-peer work supports creatives, researchers, and cultural programmers in cultivating a systems-based ecological worldview and communicating those values meaningfully in their practice, teaching, programming, or cultural policy.

By nurturing ecological consciousness and conscience, creatives—and the communities they engage—develop the ecoliteracy and agency needed to imagine and shape more life-sustaining narratives and futures.

In my presentations, I often briefly share how my ecoliteracy and agency for new ecological forest policy arose from my ongoing ecological creative practice The Hollywood Forest Story – (begun in 2008) which was the basis for my doctoral review of pioneering ecological (eco-social) art practices.

Hello! Kia Ora! Dia daoibh!

I’m Cathy Fitzgerald, an ecological artist, educator, and founder of Haumea Ecoversity. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, I’ve lived in rural Ireland, the home of my ancestors, for over 30 years. Together with my philosopher colleague Dr Nikos Patedakis (USA), we’ve guided over 400 creative professionals worldwide in transformative ecoliteracy training since 2019.

Haumea Ecoversity Community Membership is the next chapter of this work—a vibrant space for lifelong learning, collective wisdom, and creative transformation for a more beautiful, just, and life-sustaining world.

Dr Cathy Fitzgerald

“In these times of great challenge, I’m passionate about bringing ecoliteracy—including new ecological thinking, values, language, and head-heart-body practices—to creative, sustainability and cultural sectors. These areas have a crucial leadership role: they can inspire communities to embrace new values and actions for living well on Earth, together with all life.”

About Cathy
