About
Why Ecoliteracy? Discover a world of possibilities
In a time of accelerating ecological and social crises, creatives and cultural leaders hold a unique power to inspire systemic change—through richer, more meaningful approaches that reach beyond technological fixes and scientific worldviews.
Yet traditional education offers little preparation for the holistic ecological understanding and emotional resilience needed to respond wisely.
That’s where ecoliteracy comes in.
Ecoliteracy is not just knowledge—it’s a holistic way of seeing and being that connects ecological insights, ethics, creativity, and spiritual wisdom from diverse traditions to help you develop a just and ecological worldview.
At Haumea Ecoversity, we teach ecoliteracy as a transformative practice rooted in life-affirming values and the peoples’, UNESCO- and IUCN-endorsed Earth Charter that promotes principles for:
compassion and care for all beings, ecological integrity,
social and economic justice, democracy, non-violence, and peace
—so we can communicate and act for personal, collective, planetary, and intergenerational well-being in all that we do.
Aligned with Earth Charter International & Ecoversities Alliance
and as advertised in Visual Artists Ireland, ClimateCultures.Net, Creatives for Climate and Resurgence Magazine.

“Just as in her own art, where Cathy Fitzgerald is growing a forest,
in her teaching she draws together the disparate roots, branches,
leaves, seeds and flowers, leaving a healthy forest to flourish for itself.
I am very grateful.”

“Being part of the Haumea Community has transformed my life in the past year. I can’t overstate the support it offers in confronting the scale of the destruction we currently face: I have found it deeply moving and transformative to realise I am not alone in feeling so distraught about what’s happening to our world. Having a space to talk honestly about this, and to share the grief with others, is cathartic and healing and a call to positive action.”

“When I began working with Cathy through Haumea Ecoversity, I was looking for clarity and a way to speak about my work with more confidence and ease. Haumea has opened that door for me. The teachings, conversations, and gentle rhythm of the programs – even with me in a different time zone, listening later to the recorded sessions – continue to help me understand my art practice in a deeper way, especially the relationship between the land, the elements, and my creative process.“
